Effects of an Abortion

February 13, 2011 | Health

Despite the opposition by some irresponsible leaders of certain organizations, abortion is legal in most countries today, and many of the complications and risks of ‘back street’ abortions have been removed.

The effects of an abortion can vary with each woman who undergoes an abortion procedure. The effects can be both physical and emotional and it is hard to determine before the operation just what the effects might be.

Even with today’s modern technology and surgical procedures, there are certain effects and risk factors still associated with an abortion, which any woman contemplating the operation should be made aware.

Effects of an Abortion.

-          Immediately following the abortion many women experience soreness and cramps.

-          Bleeding will occur. Usually this will be no heavier or intense than common menstrual bleeding, but can often last for several weeks.

-          Stomach upsets which can include vomiting or just simple feelings of nausea.

All of these effects are common following an abortion, but if anything causes worry to the lady then she should speak the surgeon who carried out the abortion.

Occasionally complications can arise following the abortion. Indications of such complications can include –

-          Several weeks of heavy bleeding.

-          Increased temperature and fever.

-          Severe pain in the pelvic area.

-          Continuous stomach pain.

All of these effects can be warning signs of an infection or internal hemorrhage, and immediate medical advice should be obtained.

The response of the body to the abortion can cause emotional problems in the form of post partum depression. This depression results fro the level of pregnancy hormones beginning to fall. This post partum depression is not only associated with an abortion, but can be caused by any form of pregnancy termination, no matter the reason or the stage of termination.

Other emotional effects of an abortion can be feelings of guilt. Some women who have a lesser degree of post partum depression may often feel tearful, and moody. This condition will have to be suffered for a while, but will often pass within a few weeks following the abortion.

Some groups who are averse to abortions may quote these effects as reasons as to why abortions should not be permitted, but it is very much the personal decision of the lady as to whether to proceed with the abortion operation.
