The after effects of chemotherapy will primarily be determined by the type and dosage of the chemotherapy drug taken.
The chemotherapy drugs are designed to kill off the rapidly dividing malignant body cells. But at the same time healthy body cells are also dividing, and can equally be affected by the anticancer drugs.
Damage to healthy body cells results can be caused by the effects of chemotherapy. The dividing healthy body cells most likely to be affected are the blood cells which form in the marrow of the bone. But other cells can be affected also. –
- Cells in the digestive tract like the esophagus, stomach, intestines, and mouth.
- The sexual organs, so interfering with the gamete cells necessary for reproduction.
